First Victory in 2017!!!

After a less than optimal start to the second half of the season the Vikings players were eager to get back to the winning ways. The Vikings team started in a 4-5-1. US took over for Tommie in front and new guy Fredrik made his debut on the defensive midfield. It was a hard-fought battle during the 90 minutes and both teams created chances until the very end. After 30 minutes US scored the opener but the Lions made the equalizer on a great free-kick from the left side of the penalty box. Five minutes into the second half Domino kicks a free kick and hits the post. Leslie is quick to pick up the rebound and scores to 2-1 for Vikings. 15 minutes later Jonas gets the ball in the box and hard pressed by two defenders he manages to put the ball over the keeper into the side net – 3-1 Vikings! It felt like a comfortable win at this stage but Gaelic Lions bounced back after 10 mins with the 3-2 goal. The fighting for the midfield continued and with 10 minutes left the #5 player from the Gaelic team received his second yellow + red card. Despite being one man down the Gaelic Lions continued and had a huge chance 2 minutes before time to make the equalizer. Fortunately Eu Jin made amends from the 2-1 goal and made great save to secure the 3-2 win for Vikings. Very important 3 points for the Vikings and a well-deserved MOM for young Jonas. Thank you to the supporters, Gaelic Lions and the referees for a fair game.

There is nothing like a Friday night game (apart from maybe a Wednesday night game, I suppose) to whet the appetite and especially since this game was against our old friends the Vikings who, as usual, had just come from enjoying their evening meal, their 'Middag', which means midday, rather confusingly! The reason for this is of course that hot meals were traditionally served in the middle of the day, not in the evening in Denmark. However, over the past few decades, the typical meal in Denmark has developed as a result of the increasing availability of foods from supermarkets as well as the growth of the local food industry. As a result of more recent American influence, there is now considerable interest in barbecues, salad buffets and ready-to-serve dishes. Italian preparations including pizza and pasta have also become common options. Meat is increasingly popular, pork still remaining the most frequently served. Cuts are often prepared in the frying pan and accompanied by brown gravy and potatoes! Anyway, I digress.....! The game started at pace for both sides, with the Lions shading the possession and creating the early chances, the best of which was when the Lions 5'4'' 50kg no. 10 Kike the Spanish WonderChild power slammed the 6'0'' 90kg Vikings goalkeeper into the turf, before picking him up again, doing a textbook DDT, stamping on his head and giving him the finger as he buried the ball into the back of the net. At least that's what the linesman saw, clearly thinking he was at the Maracanã when he flagged for a foul after the goal had been given and when Alex and the Vikings players were retreating back to the half-way line to kick-off. Quite what the linesman thought he saw was anyone's guess because nobody else saw anything. Not for the first time this season and absolute joke-shop piece of officiating. Still, why let the referee run the game when you can make it all about yourself? As tends to be the way of these things, Vikings broke down the left shortly afterwards after great work by Jesper (MOM by a country-mile) when he squared it across the six yard box for a neat finish to make it 1-0 (not 1-1 - hah hahh!!!! ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!!). Fortunately for the Gaelic Lions Loydloyoloylodl stepped up and smashed a free-kick over the 'keeper using his famed traction-engine right foot to square proceedings a minute before HT. More amazingly weak officiating resulted in a free-kick being awarded to Vikings on the edge of the box a few minutes after the restart which was duly smashed home after coming back of the post, shite defending from the Lions, only bettered by the ultra-shite defending a few minutes later when we gift-wrapped some pickled herring and laid it on a platter for the Vikings to make it 3-1. Lions made a few changes with Brett coming on up top and he duly bagged one back to make it 3-2 and very nearly equalised in the dying seconds when the keeper scooped one off the line from a downward header. Good heart shown by the Lions who never gave up, even when down to 10 men. Speaking of which, Stevie is the Lions MOM even though he got his marching orders in the last few minutes. We asked him to do a job on Domino and he was absolutely different class. We all went to the pub afterwards and had some growlers and Smørrebrød, which interestingly originally meant "butter and bread" but in recent years has become much more varied with the potential selected toppings, like homemade cold-cuts, pieces of meat or fish, cheese or spreads. More elaborately, finely decorated varieties have contributed to the international reputation of the Danish open sandwich. A slice or two of pålæg is placed on the buttered bread and decorated with the right accompaniments to create a tasty and visually appealing food item!
