Vegas Ronnie at the double.

SCC welcomed Latini to Dempsey Field for another tough fixture. Every game in this league is now difficult, so full credit to all the Cosmo managers for improving the quality of their teams each year. This can only be good for the Cosmo League. The game started well for SCC where they were generally having good possession of the ball. The new better looking back four weren’t coming under any real danger in the opening 20 minutes. SCC soon took the lead after some good work from Rossco down the right, who cut the ball back to Liam who dispatched with confidence into the roof of the net. SCC 1-0 up and playing well before the Ronnie show started. Cruising at 1-0 up, Smollet tried to collect a slow high bouncing ball. Still thinking of Vegas from the previous weekend he fell over, lay on the field for what felt like 10 minutes, before just getting back on his feet to tip the ball over the bar. SCC breathed a sigh of relief, Ronnie started swearing at everyone and then SCC were soon 2-0 up. Ronnie launched a goal kick in anger which evaded the Latini back four for Dom to coolly lift the ball over the Latini GK. 2-0 SCC and firmly in control of the game. Latini then got a goal back before half time with a free kick that was missed by everyone before trickling into the far corner. At the start of the second half SCC then made it 3-1. Rossco done well to beat his marker before driving the ball into the roof of the net. We thought the game was over but Smollet at other ideas. If the first half he was thinking about Vegas, the second half he was acting like he was still in Vegas. Collecting a back pass he then decided to do a step over come nutmeg on the Latini striker. It obviously didn’t work and the striker chipped the ball over his head to make it 3-2. SCC didn’t panic and finished the game off with a beautiful volley from Dom into the bottom corner. MOM for SCC was Rossco, causing Latini numerous problems throughout the 90mins. MOM for Latini goes to JT.

Dempsey Doldrums

With some first team players on their weekend jollies birthday boy Tally assembled a strong squad with Smash coming in for his first game of the season on the left, and Graham “Huckerby” Bignell on the bench after his late transfer from Hotspurs. Latini’s 4-4-1-1 formation up against SCC’s 4-2-3-1 in their own back yard. In our previous performance against Rangers we played some quality passing and movement football and the plan was to continue into this game with the added benefit of JT returning in centre midfield, however our plans were disrupted when SCC opened the scoring on two minutes. Their move down the right, cross and finish by Shotts was executed perfectly, however our view was the right winger Ross received the ball in an offside position and the goal should have been ruled out. The linesman was adamant Pep had played SCC on side but he was our furthest defender up the field so the goal will remain a delusion. We recovered well and were retaining possession though our pace of passing was straightforward for SCC to handle. SCC’s keeper Ronnie then broke the Cosmo record for a goal kick which sailed over everyone with Dom the quickest to react lobbing over stand in keeper Min. A poor goal for Latini to concede. With nothing to lose Latini clicked, our passing and movement was crisper and quicker and we were making use of the runs of Mooney and LTG up front. We pulled a goal back before half time from a free kick near the touchline that McFly is claiming that appeared to elude everyone and creep in to the net. We felt the tackle for the free kick from the young left back on Lego was reckless, not intentional and deserved a red card. His studs were raised and connected at the shin, bizarrely the referees view it was a 50 / 50 challenge and it was not two footed. No changes at half time and we had momentum to take the game to SCC. Unfortunately we couldn’t create the quality chance to equalize and on the hour SCC’s man of the match Ross was able to fire home whilst evading McFly’s tackle in the box. Tally made a triple substitution and it immediately paid dividends with fresh legs. Ronnie tried sweeper keeping and got disposed by Biggsy (I prefer Huckerby with his similar posture and running style) who hooked the ball in to the empty net. Now in to the last 15 minutes we were in to “Cross fit time” and searched for an equalizer. SCC were also taking risks in an end to end finale with both Duric and Shotts missing chances, and Biggsy volleyed over from close range which would have tied the game. The match and the points was sealed when SCC capitalized on a long clearance, on the second ball Captain Eyebrows intervention slowed the ball for Dom to lash home past Min, 4-2. It was a good effort from Latini, not quite reaching the heights of the previous week but another game we felt we should have taken something from. Smash and Biggsy made big contributions to our performance. A couple of big decisions went against us and the margins are very fine these days in a very competitive Cosmo league. Congrats to SCC who were more clinical and had that little more belief, apart from one mistimed tackle the game was played in the right spirit. The two managers shared a drink and ice cream cake in a post match debrief at Harry’s, who both agreed JT and Ross were the best players on the pitch. Next game v Hibs, Saturday 8th, 3pm off at Turf City 2 Kit: - Dirty Dozen
